Melanotan II
Melanotan II
Melanocortin agonist with tanning, libido, and metabolic effects
How it works
Melanotan II is a non-selective melanocortin agonist (MC1R through MC5R). MC1R activation produces melanogenesis (tanning), MC3R/MC4R activation in the hypothalamus affects sexual arousal and appetite suppression, and MC4R in the brainstem affects erection.
What the research explores
In published research, Melanotan II has been studied in connection with the following. These describe findings reported in the literature — not approved uses, claims, or outcomes to expect.
- Stimulates melanogenesis (natural skin darkening)
- UV-protective effect via increased melanin
- Strong libido enhancement and arousal
- Appetite suppression and metabolic effects
- Erectile and arousal effects in both sexes
- Studied for compulsive eating disorders
Melanotan II was the subject of clinical trials at the University of Arizona in the 1990s, showing tanning effects at doses 10x lower than UV exposure. Its non-selectivity led to PT-141 development.
Adverse events & gaps
Significant side effects: nausea, flushing, spontaneous erection, increased moles/nevi. Long-term safety unknown. Not approved.
